1.1. Cách sử dụng của The number of

The number of (Số lượng những …): dùng để nói về số lượng; đi với danh từ số nhiều, động từ vẫn ở ngôi thứ 3 số ít.

The number of + plural noun + singular verb…

Ví dụ:

The number of days in a week is 7. (Số ngày trong một tuần là bảy).

The number of residents who have been questioned on this matter is quite small. (Số lượng người dân những người đã được đặt câu hỏi về vấn đề này là khá nhỏ).

The number of people, who have lost their job, is quite big. (Số lượng người mất việc làm là rất nhiều).

1.2. Cách sử dụng của A number of

A number of (Một số những…): dùng khi muốn nói có một vài người hoặc một vài thứ gì đó; đi với danh từ số nhiều, động từ chia ở số nhiều.

A number of + plural noun + plural verb

Ví dụ:

A number of hours have passed. (Một vài giờ đồng hồ đã trôi qua).

A number of sheep are eating grass. (Một vài con cừu đang ăn cỏ). => Chú ý “sheep” là danh từ số nhiều.

A number of people have lost their job. (Có một người đã mất việc làm).

A number of students are going to the class. (Một số sinh viên đang đi đến lớp học).

A number of applicants have already been interviewed. (Một số ứng viên đã được phỏng vấn).
