Mệnh đề chỉ sự nhượng bộ trong Tiếng Anh

MỆNH ĐỀ CHỈ SỰ NHƯỢNG BỘ TRONG TIẾNG ANH

Mệnh đề nhượng bộ (Concessive clause) là một bộ phận trong câu phức, dùng để diễn tả sự tương phản với mệnh đề chính trong câu.

Nếu trong câu đã có trạng từ chỉ sự nhượng bộ rồi thì không được dùng “but”.

Ví dụ:

• Although she worked very hard, she couldn't get promotion. (Mặc dù cô ấy làm việc rất vất vả nhưng cô ấy vẫn không thể thăng chức.)

→ She worked very hard but she couldn't get promotion.

Lưu ý: Có thể thêm “the fact that” vào sau các liên từ để nhấn mạnh sự tương phản.

Ví dụ:

• Despite the fact that his stage was evaluated as the best performance today, he didn't win the first prize. (Mặc dù sự thật là sân khấu của anh ấy được đánh giá là màn trình diễn xuất sắc nhất hôm nay nhưng an ấy vẫn không giành được giải nhất.)

2.1. Mệnh đề nhượng bộ với Although

Cấu trúc mệnh đề nhượng bộ:

Although + S + V, S + V. 

Albeit (mặc dù) + N/Adj/Adv/P2, S +V 

Trong đó:  Although = Though = Even though = Much as
            
Ví dụ:

• He stays at the head of the office although he was punished. (Anh ta vẫn là người quản lý văn phòng dù rằng anh ta vừa bị kỷ luật.)

→ Although punished, he stays at the head of the office.
→ Albeit his punishment/punished, he stays at the head of the office.

• Although performing badly in the interview, she was chosen for the job. (Mặc dù biểu hiện tệ trong buổi phỏng vấn, cô ấy vẫn được nhận vào vào việc.)

→ Much as/ Even though she performed badly in the interview, she was chosen for the job

Lưu ý: 

• Albeit thường đứng ở đầu câu
• Although có thể đứng ở đầu câu hoặc giữa câu, nếu câu có cùng chủ ngữ thì mệnh đề nhượng bộ với Although có thể lược bỏ chủ ngữ, chuyển thành quá khứ phân từ, hiện tại phân từ hoặc bị động rút gọn
• Nếu mệnh đề Although đứng trước mệnh đề chính thì cần có dấu phẩy trước mệnh đề chính. Nếu mệnh đề Although đứng sau mệnh đề chính thì không cần dấu phẩy
• Nếu trong câu có 2 chủ ngữ khác nhau thì trước danh từ phải có sở hữu. 

Ví dụ: He is intelligent, we don’t admire him. (Dù ràng anh ta rất thông minh nhưng chúng tôi không hề ngưỡng mộ anh ta.)

→ Although his intelligence, we don't admire him.

2.2. Mệnh đề nhượng bộ với However

Cấu trúc:

However adj/adv S + V, S + V.

However + S + V, S + V.

S, however, V…, S + V

S + V, S + V however.

Ví dụ: 

She was unhappy but she came to the party. (Cô ấy không vui nhưng vẫn đến tham dự bữa tiệc.)

–  However sad she was, she came to the party. (Dù không vui, cô ấy vẫn đến dự bữa tiệc.)

The boy tried hard but he couldn’t open the door. (Cậu bé cố hết sức nhưng không thể mwor được cánh cửa.)

– The boy tried hard however he couldn’t open the door. (Cậu bé đã cố hết sức, tuy vậy cậu vẫn không thể mở được cửa.)
– The boy tried hard he, however, couldn’t open the door.
– The boy tried hard, he couldn’t open the door however.

Trong đó: However = Notwithstanding (notwithstanding có thể đứng ở giữa câu hoặc cuối câu)

Notwithstanding + N, S + V 

Notwithstanding + S + V, S + V

– Notwithstanding he was short of money, he decided to buy a car. 

– Notwithstanding his shortage of money,  he decided to buy a car.

– He decided to buy a car notwithstanding his shortage of money.

2.3. Mệnh đề nhượng bộ với Despite/ In spite of

Cấu trúc mệnh đề nhượng bộ:       

Despite + N, S + V.

In spite of + N, S + V.

Trong đó: Despite = In spite of = Regardless of = Much to = In the face of = In the teeth of = As opposed to = Contrary to = In/by contrast to.

Lưu ý: Cần phân biệt Much to + N và Much as + clause. (Much to là giới từ, Much as là liên từ)

Ví dụ: 

Poverty can’t prevent him from leaving happily. (Sự nghèo khó không thể ngăn anh ấy sống hạnh phúc.)

– Regardless of his poverty, he lives happily. (Dẫu nghèo khó nhưng anh ấy vẫn sống rất hạnh phúc.)
– Much to his poverty, he lives happily
– Much as he is poor he lives happily. 

2.4. Mệnh đề nhượng bộ với Nevertheless

Cấu trúc mệnh đề nhượng bộ:         

Nevertheless S + V, S + V

Trong đó: Nevertheless = be that as it may = even now = even then = even so

Lưu ý: Nevertheless và cụm từ đồng nghĩa trên không đứng đầu câu.

Ví dụ:

• I have broken up with her for a long time but I hope she is doing well. (Tôi chia tay cô ấy đã lâu nhưng tôi hy vọng cô ấy vẫn ổn.)

→ I hope she is doing well nevertheless I have broken up with her for a long time. 
→ I hope she is doing well, as it may I have broken up with her for a long time. 
→ I hope she is doing well even now I have broken up with her for a long time. 
→ I hope she is doing well even then I have broken up with her for a long time. 
→ I hope she is doing well even so I have broken up with her for a long time. 

2.5. Mệnh đề nhượng bộ với tính từ/trạng từ

Cấu trúc mệnh đề nhượng bộ:         

Adj/Adv as S + V, S + V

Ví dụ:

• Although he works very hard, he can’t earn enough money to build a house. (mặc dù anh ấy làm việc rất chăm chỉ nhưng anh ấy vẫn không kiếm đủ tiền để xây nhà)

→ Very hard as he works, he can’t earn enough money to buy a house.

• Even though he is rich, he doesn't feel happy. (Dẫu rằng ông ấy rất giàu có nhưng ông ấy vẫn không hề cảm thấy hạnh phúc.)

→ Rich as he is, he doesn't feel happy.

2.6. Mệnh đề nhượng bộ với No matter

Cấu trúc mệnh đề nhượng bộ:         

No matter who/what/when/ where + S + V
No matter how + adj/adv/p2 S + V, S + V

Ví dụ:

• No matter who she loves, her mother objected to. (Bất kì người nào cô ấy yêu, mẹ cô ấy đều phản đối.)
• No matter what skin color is, everyone needs to be respected. (Bất kể màu da gì, mọi người đều cần được tôn trọng.)
• No matter how modern the central city is, I want to live with my family in the suburb area . (Dù trung tâm thành phố có hiện đại thế nào, tôi vẫn muốn sống cùng với gia đình ở vùng ngoại ô.)
• No matter when you come to my house, you are always welcome. (Bất kì khi nào bạn đến nhà tôi,bạn luôn luôn được chào đón.) 

2.7. Mệnh đề nhượng bộ với In any case

Cấu trúc mệnh đề nhượng bộ:         

In any case + S + V, S +V

Trong đó: In any case = In any rate = In any event = In either event = In all event

Ví dụ: 

• In any event I shall come to help you. (Dù trong trường hợp nào đi chăng nữa, tôi sẽ luôn đến giúp đỡ em.)
• Nothing can prevent me from that job. (Không gì có thể ngăn tôi làm công việc đó.)
• In any case, I shall take that job. (Dù có ra sao đi nữa, tôi sẽ làm công việc đó.)
