CÁCH SỬ DỤNG SHOULD VÀ OUGHT TO TRONG TIẾNG ANH

Should (sẽ, nên) có hình thức phủ định là Should not (Shouldn’t).

Ought to (nên) có hình thức phủ định là Ought not to (Oughtn’t to).

1.1. Cách sử dụng Should

a. Should (sẽ) là quá khứ của Shall, dùng trong câu tường thuật hoặc cấu trúc tương lai trong quá khứ

Eg: If I had freetime, I should go and see Liz.

(Nếu tôi có thời gian rảnh, tôi sẽ đi thăm Liz.)

b. Should (nên) dùng trong một số trường hợp sau đây

Chỉ sự bắt buộc, bổn phận (có thể lựa chọn làm hoặc không)	Eg: You shouldn’t drink wine and drive. (Bạn không nên uống rượu rồi lái xe.)
Đưa ra lời khuyên nhẹ nhàng	Eg: You should stop smoking, it’s not good for your health. (Bạn nên bỏ hút thuốc đi, nó không tốt cho sức khỏe của bạn đâu.)
Xin lời khuyên từ người khác	Eg: Should we invite Susan to the party? (Chúng ta có nên mời Susan đến bữa tiệc không?)
Suy đoán/ kết luận một điều gì đó mà người nói mong đợi xảy ra	Eg: We should arrive before dark. (Chúng ta sẽ đến nơi trước khi trời tối.)

c. Should have + VpII chỉ điều đáng ra đã nên làm nhưng lại không làm

Eg: I shouldn’t have behaved rudely like that.

(Đáng ra tôi không nên cư xử thô lỗ như thế.)

1.2. Cách sử dụng Ought to

Với ý nghĩa tương đương như Should (nên), ta cũng có những cách dùng sau đây của Ought to:

Chỉ sự bắt buộc, bổn phận (có thể lựa chọn làm hoặc không)	Eg: We ought to start at once. (Chúng ta phải khởi hành ngay thôi.)
Đưa ra lời khuyên (mang tính giải pháp)	(Eg: You’re not very well. Perhaps you ought to see a doctor. ((Trông bạn không được khỏe lắm. Bạn nên đi khám bệnh.)
Dự đoán điều có thể xảy ra theo logic	Eg: The weather ought to improve after this weekend. (Thời tiết sẽ tốt hơn sau cuối tuần này.)
