1.1. If only là gì?

Chúng ta sử dụng “If only” để thể hiện một mong muốn làm thay đổi một điều gì đó. Có nghĩa tương tự như “I wish” nhưng ước muốn thể hiện mãnh liệt hơn, mạnh mẽ hơn. Chúng ta có thể dùng “If only” để diễn tả những điều kiện bất thường trong quá khứ, hiện tại, lẫn tương lai.

Chúng ta có thể dùng if only ở thì quá khứ để diễn tả ước muốn ở hiện tại

Ví dụ:

•  If only he knew the truth. (he doesn’t know the truth, but he wishes he did) (Ước gì anh ta biết được sự thật (Anh ta không biết sự thật, người nói đang ước rằng anh ta biết))

Chúng ta phải dùng were thay cho was trong trường hợp cần sự trang trọng cho câu nói:

•  If only she weren’t so tired. (If only she wasn’t so tired.) (Ước gì cô ấy đã không quá mệt)

Chúng ta còn có thể dùng if only để diễn tả một sự tương phản giữa cách mà điều đó là với cách mà chúng ta muốn điều đó phải là. Hoặc để nói đến một mong muốn thay đổi một điều gì đó đã xảy ra rồi.

Ví dụ:

•  If only someone would buy the house. (Ước gì có ai đó mua nhà)

•  If only they would talk to each other. (Ước gì họ có thể nói chuyện với nhau)

•  If only he had listened to what his friends had been telling him. (He didn’t listen.) (Ước gì Anh ấy nghe được những gì bạn anh ấy nỏi về anh ấy – Anh ấy không nghe thấy)

•  If only Anna had been able to come. (Anna wasn’t able to come.) (Ước gì Anna có thể đến đây – Anna không thể đến)

1.2. Cấu trúc và cách dùng If only

a. Chúng ta sử dụng câu ước ở tương lai với mong muốn ai đó, sự việc gì đó sẽ tốt đẹp hơn sau này.

Cấu trúc

IF ONLY + S + would/ could + V (bare-infinitive)

Ví dụ:

•  If only I would take the trip with you next week.

•  If only I would be able to attend your wedding next week.

Động từ ở mệnh đề sau đứng sau Modal verbs (would/could…) nên ta phải chia ở dạng nguyên thể không “to” V (bare-infinitive).

b. Câu ước ở hiện tại dùng để diễn tả những mong ước về một sự việc không có thật ở hiện tại,  hoặc ngược lại so với thực tế, thường là thể hiện sự nuối tiếc về tình huống hiện tại (regret about present situations).

Cấu trúc:

IF ONLY + S+ V (simple past)

Động từ BE được sử dụng ở dạng giải định cách, tức là ta chia BE = WERE với tất cả các chủ ngữ để tang tính trang trọng.

Ví dụ:

•  If only she were here. (The fact is that she isn’t here).

c. Câu ước ở quá khứ diễn tả những ước muốn về một sự việc không có thật, trái ngược so với thực tế đã diễn ra ở quá khứ. Chúng ta sử dụng câu ước ở qúa khứ để ước rằng những việc ở quá khứ chưa bao giờ xảy ra, hoặc có thể thay đổi được quá khứ, nhưng điều này đương nhiên là không thể.

Cấu trúc:

IF ONLY + S + V (P2)

IF ONLY+ S + COULD HAVE + P2

Động từ ở mệnh đề sau have chia ở thì quá khứ hoàn thành.

Ví dụ:

•  If only I had gone by taxi. (I didn’t go by taxi).

•  If only I had met her yesterday. (I didn’t meet her).

•  If only there was something she could do or say to help.
