1.1. Khái niệm

Had better nghĩa là gì?

Better là tính từ (cấp so sánh của good) có nghĩa là hơn; tốt hơn; khá hơn; hay hơn; cải thiện hơn.

Had better dịch theo nghĩa đen có nghĩa là làm cho tốt hơn; cải tiến; cải thiện hơn; mang chiều hướng tích cực hơn.

Tuy nhiên trong Tiếng Anh “had better” lại được sử dụng với ý nghĩa như một động từ khuyết thiếu có nghĩa là nên làm gì; tốt hơn là làm gì.

1.2. Cấu trúc

- Thể khẳng định:

S + had better + V (infinitive)

Peter had better stop smoking. (Peter tốt hơn nên bỏ hút thuốc.)

- Thể phủ định:

S + Had better / ’d better + not + V (infinitive)

You’d better not tell Maria about the broken window. (Không nên nói với Maria về cái cửa sổ vỡ.)

- Thể nghi vấn

Had + (not) + S + better + V (infinitive)?

Ví dụ: Had we better sleep now? (Có tốt hơn chúng ta nên đi ngủ bây giờ?)

1.3. Cách dùng

Had better được sử dụng để khuyên bảo ai đó nên thực hiện hành động gì; phải làm gì trong hoàn cảnh cụ thể. Nếu không làm thì có thể gặp rắc rối hoặc vấn đề nguy hiểm.

Had better thường được sử dụng trong văn nói;

Had better viết tắt là ’d better

Had better được dùng để chỉ lời khuyên ở thời hiện tại hoặc tương lai nhưng không được dùng với thời quá khứ.

1.4. So sánh had better với Should

Về ngữ nghĩa, had better cũng giống như should là đều có nghĩa là nên làm gì; phải làm gì. Tuy nhiên giữa had better và should lại có sự khác biệt ở điểm sau:

• Had better được dùng để khuyên ai đó trong những điều kiện; hoàn cảnh cụ thể và đặc biệt. Nếu không làm như thế thì sẽ có nguy cơ lớn gặp phải rắc rối hoặc nguy hiểm.
• Should là động từ khuyết thiếu, quá khứ của shall để chỉ nghĩa vụ hoặc lời khuyên; lời giới thiệu. Tuy nhiên khác với cấu trúc had better, should được sử dụng trong những trường hợp tổng quát hơn.
• Should ở thể phủ định là should not; viết tắt là shouldn’t.

- Cách dùng của should

• Khẳng định : S + should+ Verb (nguyên mẫu)+…
• Phủ định: S + should + not +Verb (nguyên mẫu)+…
• Nghi vấn: Should+ S + Verb (nguyên mẫu)+…+?

Ví dụ:

They should stop smoking in the hospital. (Họ không nên hút thuốc trong bệnh viện.)

You shouldn’t drink and drive. (Bạn không nên uống rượu và lái xe => chỉ nghĩa vụ.)

It rains very hard today. I thinks everyone should wear raincoat. (Trời mưa nặng hạt hôm nay. Tôi nghĩ mọi người ra đường nên mặc áo mưa.)
