READING

PASSAGE 1

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best  answer to each of the questions.

Featuring the throwing of coloured powder and water balloons, Holi has become known as India's most  lively, joyous festival. International travel groups selling tours to the country often place photos of boisterous

Holi celebrations together with pictures of the Taj Mahal.

Holi has been celebrated in the Indian subcontinent for centuries. Many poems and stories showed the  celebrations of Holi appeared in the fourth century. Holi festival marks the beginning of spring after a long  winter. It is the symbol of the triumph of good over evil. It is celebrated in March according to the Hindu  calendar month of Phalguna.

Holi's origin was mentioned in several works of ancient Indian literature. According to one popular story of  Holi's origin, an evil king became so powerful that he forced his people to worship him as their god. His son  Prahlada, however, continued to be a loyal supporter of the Hindu god, Lord Vishnu. The angry king and his  sister, Holika, found all ways to kill his son. Holika, who could not be damaged by fire, tricked Prahlada to  accompany her in a pyre. When the pyre was lit, the boy's devotion to Lord Vishnu helped him walk away  safely while Holika, from whom the festival gets its name, was burned to death to all other people's surprise.

On the eve of the festival, large pyres are lit in various parts of India to signify the burning of evil spirits.  People often throw wood, dried leaves and twigs into bonfires. On the day of Holi, entire streets and towns  turn red, green and yellow as people throw coloured powder into the air and splash it on others. Each colour  carries a meaning. Red, for example, symbolizes love and fertility while green means new beginnings. People  also splash water on each other in celebration. Water guns are used to squirt water while balloons filled with  coloured water are also flung from rooftops. Later in the day, families gather together for festive meals. It is  also common to give sweets to neighbours and friends.

Although the Hindu festival of colours finds its origins in South Asia, it has now become popular across the  globe. Millions of Indians and other South Asians living all over the world make Holi events appear across  the U.S., the U.K. and elsewhere.

PASSAGE 2

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the questions.

There is no doubt that COVID-19 will have long-term mental health implications. Families are dealing  with extremely difficult situations that have threatened their basic need for safety and security. However,  forcing families to spend time together during stay-at-home, work-at-home and virtual learning may bring  them benefits. The pandemic can allow our resilience to shine through and show our children how to make  the best of even the worst situations.

Family resilience is built by finding flexibility to react to changing circumstances, leading to cooperation  and closer family bonds. Families have had the opportunity to spend more time together and get back to  basics, increasing the time parents spend with their children. A survey of 2,000 British parents in the United  Kingdom shows that most families have risen above the stress of the pandemic to become even closer than  before. The survey reveals that four in five believe their families have formed a stronger bond.

Another positive effect of the pandemic is children have more control of their time, allowing them to  manage more of their day. This encourages independent behaviours, such as preparing snacks, doing chores  and resolving sibling disputes when parents must focus on work. There are many ways to help children learn  to be more independent and accountable. Involving children in the work of the family can help their self

regard and responsibility, increasing self-esteem. The goal is to give children the skills necessary to handle  whatever life throws at them. Chores can change with age and can include making their bed, putting their  clothes away, doing the dishes, sweeping and taking out the trash. As children get older, they can have more  tasks, while keeping in mind their number one priority is education.

Moreover, children have more time to rest without travel to school, work and after-school activities. As a  result, many children have an additional three hours of sleep that they would have spent on the bus or travel.  However, it is important for them to avoid waking up and turning on the computer right away. Parents are  encouraged to treat every day, especially the days children attend virtual school, as if they were going to  physical school. They should get up, take a shower, eat breakfast and get dressed. This is a big part of  respecting themselves and others and keeping a routine so important to their own stability.

All things considered, being forced to halt busy lives and spend time together has made many think about  what's important, including children, family and the community.

Read the passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer to each of the questions from 15 to 21 The authors noted that while other forms of pollution are decreasing, noise pollution has been increasing.  This conclusion is reinforced by the fact that there has been an increase in the number of people who have been complaining about excessive noise in the WHO region. Populations that are exposed to high noise levels can be afflicted by other symptoms such as: stress reactions, sleep-stage changes, and clinical symptoms like hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. All these impacts can contribute to premature mortality. It is important to note that these adverse health problems impact all age groups including children and adolescents. In fact, it has been reported that children who live and or study in an area afflicted with noise pollution tend to suffer from stress, impairments in memory and attention as well as  difficulty reading.

“In Western Europe, the guidelines say, traffic noise results in an annual loss of at least one million healthy years”. Traffic noise is currently ranked second among environmental threats to public health.

The danger of noise pollution is more present to us when we are asleep. Because the human ear is so sensitive, it never rests, it is always working, picking up and transmitting sounds for our brains to interpret.  This always on working process is where the danger lies, though you may be sleeping, sounds are still being  picked up and processed. The most common side effects of this phenomenon are sleep disturbance and  tiredness, impaired memory, judgment, and psychomotor skills. The other more serious outcomes of this can  be the triggering of the body’s acute stress response, which raises blood pressure and heart rate as the body  and brain go into a state of hyperarousal. According to the European Environment Agency, at least 10,000  cases of premature deaths from noise exposure occur each year, although incomplete data mean this number  is significantly underestimated.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct  answer to each of the questions

Grandparents are becoming the forgotten generation, with youngsters now too busy to listen to their stories  from the olden days.

A study of 1,000 five- to 18-year-olds reveals just 21 per cent will visit their older relatives to hear about how  their lives were different in the past; such as where they worked, how it was living in the war, and how they  met the love of their life. More than half of youths have no idea what job their grandparent did before  retirement. Sadly, one in ten admit they are simply not interested in their grandmother’s or grandad’s talents  and interests, and a quarter only turn up to see them for pocket money. But 23 percent claim the reason they  don’t know anything about their older relatives is that they don’t really get the chance to talk properly.

Researchers found that although 65 per cent of youngsters do see their grandparents every single week, 37  per cent claim this is only because their parents want them to. And while 39 per cent talk to their  grandparents on the phone, Facebook or Skype at least once a week – 16 per cent once a day – conversation  is rarely focused on what they are doing or have done in the past. Four in 10 kids have no idea what their  grandparent’s proudest achievements are, while 30 per cent don’t know if they have any special skills or  talents. Ecotourism is a unique way for travellers to engage in sustainable tourism while vacationing. This specific  type of tourism is now increasingly becoming one of the most popular, with growth rates increasing every

year. The United Nations, aware of the fact that tourism could be one of the most detrimental activities if not  planned in accordance with the threshold imposed by nature, has declared the celebration of the International  Day of Ecotourism, to promote sustainable practices in this growing industry.

Recently, The Division for Sustainable Development, Small Island Developing States Unit, decided that in  preparation for the International Day of Ecotourism, it would be beneficial to identify successful practices of  ecotourism on small islands. In order for ecotourism to be categorized as successful, it must meet the  following criteria: it must combine natural and cultural tourism; it must involve local populations in the  program, including providing educational resources to the local community, it must identity, manage and  conserve the natural and cultural environment as well as the resources on the island; it must generate  practices that will lead to the future sustainability of the island. If these criteria are followed by an "eco"  organization, it deserves to be recognized as successful.

An air pollutant is defined as a compound added directly or indirectly by humans to the atmosphere in such  quantities as to affect humans, animals, vegetation, or materials adversely. Air pollution requires a very  flexible definition that permits continuous changes. When the first air pollution laws were established in  England in the fourteenth century, air pollutants were limited to compounds that could be seen or smelled- a  far cry from the extensive list of harmful substances known today. As technology has developed and  knowledge of health aspects of various chemicals has increased, the list of air pollutants has lengthened. In  the future, even water vapor might be considered an air pollutant under certain conditions.

Many of more important air pollutants, such as sulfur oxides, carbon monoxides and nitrogen oxides are  found in nature. As the Earth developed, the concentration of these pollutants was altered by various  chemical reactions, they became components in biogeochemical cycles. These serve as an air purification  scheme by allowing the compounds to move from the air to the water or soil. On a global basis, nature's  output of these compounds dwarfs that resulting from human activities.

However, human production usually occurs in a localized area, such as a city. In such region, human  output may be dominant and may temporarily overload the natural purification scheme of the cycles. The  result is a concentration of noxious chemicals in the air. The concentrations at which the adverse effects  appear will be greater than the concentrations that the pollutants would have in the absence of human

activities. The actual concentration need not be large for a substance to be a pollutant; in fact, the numerical  value tells us little until we know how much of an increase this represents over the concentration that would  occur naturally in the area. For example, sulfur dioxide has detectable health effects at 0.08 parts per million  (ppm), which is about 400 times its natural level. Carbon monoxide, however has a natural level of 0.1 ppm  and is not usually a pollutant until its level reaches about 15 ppm.

Consider the following scenario of the future of education made possible through developments  in information technology.

For children over the age of 10, daily attendance at schools is not compulsory. Some of the older children  attend school only once or twice a weekly to get tutorial support or instruction from a teacher. For the most  part, pupils are encouraged to work online from home. Students should complete a minimum number of  study hour per year; however, they may make up these hours by studying at home at times that suit their  family schedule. They can log on early or late in the day and even join live classes in other countries. In order  to ensure that each student is learning adequately, computer software will automatically monitor the number  hours a week each student studies on line as well as that student's learning materials and assessment  activities. Reports will be available for parents and teachers. The software can then identify the best learning  activities and conditions for each individual student and generate similar activities. It can be also identify  areas of week achievement and produce special programs adjusted to the students' needs.
