In a striking experiment, Carter dealt with the theme of Little Red Riding Hood in a group of mutually echoing short stories, one radio script, and one homonymous screenplay (for Neil Jordan’s 1984 The Company of Wolves). By thus retelling one single subject matter in various, mutually reverberating ways, Carter mimicked a live tradition. Since her stories present variations on a common theme, they beg for intertextual readings – like folkloric versions do (see Intertextuality). And since Carter’s readings of the theme come embedded in multinarrative interplay, rather than being conveyed through analytic discourse, she evades a hard-set interpretation that would close up on itsefl – as a single text would tend to.
