Dân tộc Việt Nam với lịch sử bốn nghìn năm dựng nước và giữ nước, trong suốt chiều dài lịch sử ấy có những truyền thống tốt đẹp được lưu truyền từ đời này qua đời khác. Một trong số đó là truyền thống yêu thương con người tinh thần tương thân tương ái được thể hiện qua câu tục ngữ: “Lá lành đùm lá rách”.

Như đã nói ở trên, truyền thống yêu thương con người, tinh thần tương thân tương ái, giúp đỡ lẫn nhau lúc khó khăn là một trong những truyền thống lâu đời nhất của dân tộc ta.

Về câu tục ngữ, câu này có hai lớp nghĩa, xét về lớp nghĩa đen là lớp nghĩa mà ta có thể thấy nó hiện ngay trong từng chữ mà chúng ta không cần phải suy luận gì. Lớp nghĩa này có thể hiểu  là trong một cây, những chiếc lá lành có thể “che chở” cho những chiếc lá rách nát không lành lặn để cùng nhau vượt qua một trận mưa bão mà chiếc lá rách kia không bị rụng xuống. Từ lớp nghĩa đen này, ta có thể suy ra lớp nghĩa bóng của câu tục ngữ – là lớp nghĩa không hiển thị trực tiếp và người đọc phải tự suy luận ra dựa trên lớp nghĩa đen. Với câu tục ngữ này ta có thể hiểu nghĩa bóng của nó là nói về tình yêu thương, tinh thần tương thân tương ái giúp đỡ nhau lúc gặp khó khăn, hoạn nạn. Những người giàu thì giúp đỡ người nghèo, người đầy đủ thì giúp đỡ người túng thiếu. Cũng có rất nhiều câu ca dao, tục ngữ nói về tinh thần này như câu: “Bầu ơi thương lấy bí cùng/ Tuy rằng khác giống nhưng chung một giàn”, hay “Nhiễu điều phủ lấy giá gương/ Người trong một nước phải thương nhau cùng”.
