New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the heart of the New York metropolitan area, one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world. New York was founded by the Dutch as a trading post in 1624. The settlement was once known as New Amsterdam until 1664 when the colony was controlled by the United Kingdom. New York was the capital of the United States from 1785 to 1790. It was the largest city in the United States since 1790.
Many of the city's neighborhoods and landscapes have become famous around the world. The Statue of Liberty has welcomed millions of migrants when they arrived in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Wall Street, in Lower Manhattan, has been a major international financial center since the Second World War. Second place and where the New York Stock Exchange. The city is home to many of the tallest buildings in the world, including the Empire State Building and the former World Trade Center towers.
